Building Typology & Materiality – U.S. Embassy

The Site

The U.S. Embassy

The U.S. Embassy is in the Center of Oslo. It is located at the corner of Dronnings Parken in Slottsparken as one corner at the intersection of Parkveien and Henrik Ibsens Gate. There are a number of important buildings around, including Norwegian Nobel Peace Centre and an entrance to National Theatre Station. It is located along one of the major roads into Oslo city centre for vehicular access including buses and trams.

History

Henrik Ibsens gate 48

Designed by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen with assistance from John Engh and Henrik Kiær, the U.S. Embassy was built in 1959. In 2015, the U.S. Embassy will move to new facilities in Huseby forest, near Makrellbekken T and Mærradalen.

Building Typology & Materiality

Facade Study

Here I did a study of facades, materials and their visual connection to surrounding buildings. It is clear that the U.S. Embassy has a very modern and distinctive facade compared to its surroundings.

Future…

Site Potential

As the U.S. Embassy plans to move out soon, new potential for the building arises. By removing barriers and endowing new functions, the building itself could become a more vivid and attractive place.
